In short
Query fan-out is the technique AI search engines use to split one prompt into several sub-queries, run those searches, and build a single answer from the combined results. Google names it explicitly for AI Mode and says AI Overviews may use it too, and OpenAI, Anthropic, Google's Gemini API and Perplexity document the same pattern of multiple searches per request. It matters because pages are retrieved for the sub-queries, not only for the prompt a user typed, so covering the subtopics an engine searches for is part of being citable.
